How to Temporarily Patch a Roof Leak

If you discover a roof leak, acting quickly to make a temporary patch can help prevent further water damage until professional repairs can be made. Here are practical steps to temporarily patch a roof leak:

1. Ensure Safety First

  • Only attempt repairs during safe weather conditions—never during storms or when the roof is wet or icy.

  • Use a sturdy ladder, wear non-slip shoes, and consider fall protection gear.

2. Locate the Leak

  • Find the source of the leak from inside the attic by looking for water stains, drips, or wet insulation.

  • Trace the water path up the rafters to the entry point.

3. Apply a Temporary Patch

  • Plastic Sheeting: Cut a piece of heavy-duty plastic or tarp large enough to cover the damaged area. Secure it with roofing nails or staples, and seal edges with roofing tape or duct tape.

  • Roofing Cement: Apply roofing cement or sealant directly to small holes or cracks. Use a putty knife to spread it evenly.

  • Shingle Replacement: If a shingle is missing or damaged, place a new shingle or piece of roofing material over the spot and secure it with roofing nails and cement.

4. Contain Interior Water Damage

  • Place buckets or containers under drips inside the house.

  • Use towels or a wet/dry vacuum to remove standing water.

5. Call a Professional

  • Temporary patches are not a permanent fix. Contact a licensed roofer as soon as possible for a thorough inspection and permanent repairs.

A temporary patch can minimize damage from a roof leak, but prompt professional repair is essential for long-term protection.
