What Happens During a Roof Tear-Off

A roof tear-off is the process of completely removing all existing roofing materials down to the roof deck before installing a new roof. This thorough approach ensures the new roof is built on a solid, undamaged foundation. Here’s what to expect during a typical roof tear-off:

1. Preparation

  • Contractors protect landscaping, windows, and siding with tarps and plywood.

  • All necessary tools, dumpsters, and materials are brought onsite.

2. Removal of Old Roofing

  • Shingles, tiles, or other roofing materials are stripped away using specialized tools.

  • Old underlayment and flashing are also removed to expose the roof deck.

3. Inspection of Roof Deck

  • The bare roof deck is carefully inspected for rot, water damage, or structural issues.

  • Damaged sections are repaired or replaced to ensure a sound base for the new roof.

4. Clean-Up and Prep

  • All debris is removed, and the deck is swept clean.

  • New underlayment, flashing, and drip edges are installed as needed.

5. Installation of New Roofing

  • With the deck prepared, new roofing materials are installed according to manufacturer specifications and building codes.

6. Final Clean-Up

  • Contractors remove all leftover materials and nails, ensuring the site is safe and tidy.

A roof tear-off is a critical step for a long-lasting new roof. It allows for a thorough inspection and proper repairs, ensuring your new roof performs well for years to come.
